How North Carolina Helped Make Barack Obama A Two Term President ...

Whether you are an Obama fan or not ... whether you think he is the lesser of two evils or the epitome of evil or the best gosh durn thing that ever happened to this country ... he made history the other day by coming out in support of gay marriage ... that being said I actually believe that what he was responding to will have more of an impact on the upcoming election than his own statement ...

Top GOP pollsters are reporting that if the Republican party does not back off in the fight against gay marriage that they will marginalize themselves into "insignificance" ... and I agree ...

Every few generations there comes an issue that just can't be overlooked in the grand scheme of our country ... the end of slavery, women receiving the right to vote, "colored" people receiving the right to vote, the ban on the segregation of schools, workplaces and government facilities, the Vietnam war ... and now we have gay marriage ... in all of these situations what the "conservative" party never understands is this is almost a generational
barricade they put around themselves ... sure there are people in older generations that support gay marriage, that's not what I'm saying ... but as generations come up they will be less opposed to things that quite literally just don't make sense ... and they won't buy into the arguments that have existed either ...

The slippery slope argument that somehow allowing gay marriage will lead to someone being able to marry a dog or a toddler is just a ridiculous argument that the average fourteen year-old will laugh at ... nonetheless an eighteen year old that will be voting for the first time this November ... if I searched hard enough I could probably find an article stating that at some point in time they believed if they gave women the right to vote that eventually dogs would vote too ... I agree that a slippery slope exists in some issues ... but this is not one of them ...

There are two major social issues that in polls over and over again will either decide a vote for people or will make them abstain from voting ... those two issues are abortion and gay marriage ... there are a high number of people that just absolutely refuse to vote for any politician that does not support gay marriage or does not stand behind Roe vs Wade ... people will absolutely refuse to vote for Mitt Romney because of one of those two issues ... and since he's on the "progressively wrong side of the road" on both issues ... well ... unfortunately for my lovely Republican friends ... I doubt they will see a victory this fall ...

After North Carolina's decision to define marriage as only between one man and one woman there was outrage ... I saw it ... all over my Facebook newsfeed ... people were pissed ... they were name calling ... I didn't see a single voice in support of North Carolina's decision (and trust me I have an eclectic group of political views among my friends) ... several hours later Barack Obama came out in support of gay marriage ... mostly because whenever something that causes that many political fireworks comes out the president (regardless of political affiliation) always says something ... the praise came rolling in .... a few days later ... Mitt Romney would confirm that he still stands behind the statement that marriage can only be defined as being "between one man and one woman" in a college graduation address ... and this is how an election is lost ... people who have strong feelings against Obama, but can't see themselves voting for Mitt Romney (a presidential candidate who seriously wants to hold back basic rights from both women in general and the GLBT community) may vote for Ron Paul ... although he comes with his own set of bigoted demands and his own stance on abortion remains sketchy ... he has come out in support of civil unions ... but that isn't really what the GLBT community is looking for ... so this takes us back to two options for more than 65% of American voters that want to stand by their social beliefs ... vote for Obama or abstain from voting ... as Romney continues to lose not only voter support, but financial support as well ... it starts to appear more and more like North Carolina's very Republican/conservative decision will in the end be what pushed over what was left of doubt that Obama will be a two term president ...

There are still months to go and many things can happen ... but as usual I hear very little in the way of insightful helpful politics coming from the mouths of the Republicans ... I hear a lot of spin doctoring coming from the Democrats ... but at least they talk about issues ... usually ... except all those commercials about how rich Romney is ... those don't have anything to do with well ... anything ... in the end I think this election will be a landslide ... much like the one four years ago ... and I doubt anybody will really be that surprised ...
